U.S.A. Olympic Rugby Champions
The mighty United States of America hold the record, of course!
The Seppos won the gold medal in the 1920 (Antwerp, Belgium) games and the 1924 (Paris, France) games meaning that they are the only country to win the Rugby Olympic gold medal twice.
Other gold medalists are France and Australasia (Wallabies) who have won the gold once each. France holds the record as the country winning the most Olympic medals with one gold and two silver. Other countries to have won minor medals are Great Britain, Germany and Romania.
Who knew that the Germans had won an Olympic medal at rugby? These days Germans seem to prefer non-contact sports like tennis, golf and soccer. Well, that’s a bit unfair. In truth the German national rugby team are making great strides in Europe right now and are knocking on the door of success in the second tier of Euro rugby. Who knows. They might even make it into “Six Nations” (top tier) one day.
