Wednesday 23rd November – The Pass, Byron Bay

I know. I know. I know. There should never be over twenty images in the one post but what the hell. I originally took about one hundred that I liked… managed to get it down to forty… then edited it down to just this measly twenty of so. The Pass has not been this good in ages. We have been so starved of waves. Everyone came out to enjoy the late arvo waves and everyone looked so good I just didn’t know who to cut. I know the quality of photography isn’t great but I liked these shots because they told a story about style. Well they did to me anyway.

Jack and Marty set the tone for sartorial elegance! And Jack ripped in the water.

This is a neat little barrel nailed by… by somebody.

So many folks out enjoying the afternoon.

This bloke’s surfing was extraordinary. Now that is a stylish reo!

Visitors with Latino accents showed that locals were not the only ones with style.

Seriously! Check out this log re-entry. This guy is the surfer from hell.

“Who is the old dude following me?” wonders Jack Sacks. “Ooooh… its Dad.”

I do like the look of this board. Not sure whether it is a single fin or a quad.

So while we are talking about style and sartorialism this was way the best swimsuit on the beach.

This is little Ras of the King clan if I am not mistaken. Do the King’s always look stylish or what? Both in the water and on the land.

Its hard to tell from this pic but the way this bloke worked his way to the nose was elegance personified.

Don’t see that many thruster logs around any more. This bloke and his beautiful blue thruster showed that such boards still have plenty of style.

If you are wondering whether this bloke made the drop, he did. And he did all day long.

Catch a wave. Get out at Clarkes. Then slowly wander back to the Pass. Then do it again! Dozens on the joyful trek back up the beach.

I know its not a spectacular shot but I like the way he drove his board into this power section and comes out with mega speed.

Tim Edwards has had a completely rubbish sporting career so it is odd that he seems so obsessed with sport and adventuring. As a basketball shooting guard he had an okay jump shot but couldn't do anything else. As a rugby hooker he spent more time puking then actually playing. As a runner he won an awful lot of consolation prize chocolates for coming fourth but almost never won a ribbon. Despite his inadequacies he still loves sport and has opinions on almost any sporting subject. Tim has spent large parts of his working life in publishing and writing roles and has even done his share of teaching sport management to Uni students. He has coached more sports teams than he cares to remember. Tim is an awful surfer and skier but his lack of competence does not bother him one little bit!

One of the greatest cricket “all-rounders” of all time, Keith Miller was not only an exceptional performer in multiple elements of test cricketing (batting, bowling and fielding) but he was also gifted in numerous other aspects of his life. Witty, entertaining, handsome, a renowned war time pilot and gifted Australian Rules Footballer, Miller was famed for calling a spade a spade and acknowledging that there was much more to life than elite sports. Celtic football coach Ange Postecoglou’s post League Cup interview avoided the normal “we knew we had to…”, “full credit to the boys…” and “we talked about blah blah blah during the week…” bollocks that is so common in post-match player and coach chats with the media. The coach actually revealed important insights into the way great coaches think and how they seek to get the best out of their players. Any coach aspiring to become a great coach, no matter what sport they teach should listen to this interview. Postecoglou is the real deal. There are few coaches better at getting the most out of their team.
