Saturday, January 7 – Cavvanbah Sports Centre – pickup basketball

Regular Saturday arvo pickup was on at the Byron Bay Cavvanbah Sports Centre. All of the usual stars were out and shining. One bloke with a penchant for low post play showed what basketball sartorial style is all about while simultaneously proving that power forwards and centres can actually dress well. You don’t have to be Steph Curry to be cool, it seems. Check out the pics below. The bloke in the orange and grey shirt and tartan checkered shorts stands out. Charlie gave him a run for his money in the fashion stakes, though. A mullet, a Bintang shirt and side-burns! Go Charlie! Next best were Nash and Brett in the traditional Brews strip. That is hard to beat.

bb6 — Not sure whether the vertical action was really necessary, Luke. Horizontal might have been more effective. Beaten by a point guard again!

bb16 — To all the lazy dribblers outs there… note the bend knees and low to the ground. Awesome!

bb23 — Are you wearing pink fluffy slippers for sneakers, Luke?

bb12 — More dribbling instruction from the young’uns. Note the eyes up! Wouldn’t happen like this in soccer.

bb21 — Seriously, Phil. This column is about sartorialism. Basketballers don’t wear thongs. Ever!

bb20 — This guy is so well dressed that he could get kicked out of the power forward’s union. Meant to look tough… not smart.

bb5 — Brett showing “float like a butterfly” moves but modelling the insane Brew’s uniform. They not only play really good but look brilliant.

bb19 — When it comes to fashion and style I reckon Charlie has achieved a whole new level in bravery and originality. Not many would be tough enough to match a mullet with a Bintang singlet. That’s brilliant! And the side-levers, too. Move over Dennis Rodman. Charlie can play too. Perimeter or big guy style.

bb3 — If you can believe physics, it will come down eventually and I’m not jumping until it does.

bb2 — Luke. I told you to sing the top part. Your baritone is shit. On the count of three. One… two…

bb8 — Definitely the best shirt I have ever seen.

bb4 — Campbell plays every spot on the court… and models the Brews strip pretty well too!

bb13 — I swear the kids can jump higher than the big people.

Celtic football coach Ange Postecoglou’s post League Cup interview avoided the normal “we knew we had to…”, “full credit to the boys…” and “we talked about blah blah blah during the week…” bollocks that is so common in post-match player and coach chats with the media. The coach actually revealed important insights into the way great coaches think and how they seek to get the best out of their players. Any coach aspiring to become a great coach, no matter what sport they teach should listen to this interview. Postecoglou is the real deal.
